What is Vinyasa Flow Yoga?

Vinyasa Flow is a dynamic style of yoga which combines fluidity with precision and alignment to create strength, flexibility and awareness in the body. Vinyasa means 'to place in a special way' and refers to the intelligent sequencing of the practice as well as the synchronisation of movement with breath which allows us to release tension deep within the body. The breath is vital to the practice of Vinyasa Flow as it guides us through the asanas and informs us on how best to serve the body.

I like to think of Vinyasa Flow Yoga as a moving mediatation, allowing us to cultivate deep inner awareness as we move through each asana to the rhythm of the breath. The flowing dance-like nature of the practice builds heat or agni in the body which detoxifies and revitalises the body, while the breath synchronisation calms and quiets the mind.

From my classes you can expect a sweet balance of power and release. To begin we take a short meditation or a long-held restorative posture to allow us to focus on the breath and quiet the mind. We then begin a gentle warm-up before moving through a series of sun salutations to build heat in the body and release tension in the muscles. The class will end with some yummy heart-openers, hip-openers and the option to go upside down before the final savasana. There will also be rhythmic music to accompany the practice and add to the 'flow' element of the class.

Vinyasa Flow is accessible to all students at any age, helping with strength and flexibility in the body and mind.
